How do I apply directly to the UK NMC from Nigeria or Ghana?

Start with the NMC overseas eligibility and qualification assessment in MyNMC. Submit your identity and qualification or registration details, then respond to the evidence requests while the NMC verifies information with your regulator and, where needed, your training institution. If eligible, complete any Test of Competence the NMC requires and submit health, character and English evidence with any required results. All applicants must also attend a face-to-face identity check at an NMC Test of Competence centre.

Will I need the Test of Competence, and what English evidence applies?

The NMC decides whether you need the Test of Competence after assessing your qualification and eligibility; it is not an automatic first step. If required, the CBT has Numeracy and Clinical parts and the OSCE is a practical examination. English language evidence applies to applicants trained outside the UK regardless of nationality. The NMC assesses evidence across reading, writing, listening and speaking; Supporting Information from Employers (SIFE) is supplementary and only available to applicants who meet the NMC's criteria, not a standalone route.

Where should I check Nigerian or Ghanaian registration records?

The UK NMC may need a response from your regulator and, where required, your training institution. Local record and verification steps are country-specific: ask the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) about Nigerian records, or the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana about Ghanaian records. Their guidance does not replace the evidence requested by the UK NMC, which decides your UK application.

As checked 6 November 2026, the NMC lists a £1,226 total for first sittings when the Test of Competence is required: £167 qualification evaluation (non-refundable, paid to NMC), £83 CBT and £794 OSCE (paid to the test provider only if required), and £182 registration (paid to NMC, refundable in certain circumstances). Resits, visa, flights, accommodation and travel are excluded.

How long does the NMC process take?

The NMC estimates it will assess your qualification within 14 days after it receives the regulator response (and institution response where required). It aims to consider a complete registration application within 30 days after the required health, character and language evidence, any applicable CBT and OSCE results, and the registration fee arrive. Once eligibility is confirmed, you have two years to complete registration. These are NMC aims, not guaranteed deadlines.
